Mountain Lions fall to Shorter in season finale

ROME, Ga. – Kyle VanKauwenberg scored five goals as Shorter University defeated Young Harris College 15-5 in a non-conference men's lacrosse match Saturday (April 12) afternoon  at Ben Brady Field.

The Hawks improved to 6-7 while the Mountain Lions conclude their second campaign with a 6-9 ledger. The match marked the final games for YHC seniors Andrew Kim, Bobby Parker and Ryan Ningard.

Shorter took a 2-0 lead on a Kyle Morris goal with 13:27 left in the second quarter before the Mountain Lions scored on back-to-back goals by Zachary Laird and Matt Spadafora in a 52 second span to tie match with 6:13 remaining in the first half.

The Hawks scored the final five goals of the first half to take a 7-2 lead at the break. After a Joe Appolonia goal four minutes into the second half, Shorter reeled off the next seven goals to open a 14-3 lead with 6:55 to play. Spadafora and Adam Staniewicz accounted for the final two scores by the Mountain Lions.

Appolonia, Eric Fancher, Ningard and Staniewicz each tallied an assist for the Mountain Lions. Kim recorded seven faceoff wins while Kim and Staniewicz led Young Harris with four ground balls. Spadafora, Laird, Stephen Jordan and Appolonia each scooped up two ground balls apiece. Alex Schneider (nine) and Parker (seven) combined for 16 saves in goal for Young Harris.
