BOONE, N.C. – Ryan Ningard scored three goals as Young Harris College defeated Lees-McRae College 7-3 in a non-conference men's lacrosse match Sunday (March 30) afternoon at Watauga High School.
The Mountain Lions improved to 4-8 while the Bobcats remained winless in nine matches. Young Harris returns home for the final time when they host Reinhardt University in a 7 p.m. match Wednesday (April 2) at the YHC Soccer and Lacrosse Field.
Young Harris dominated Lees-McRae as they outshot the Bobcats 59-22 and won 11 of the 14 faceoffs.
Lees-McRae got back-to-back goals from Schuylor Dickerson and Louis Parks in a 43-second span as the Bobcats took a 2-0 lead with 5:15 remaining in the first quarter. Zachary Laird scored the first of six unanswered goals by the Mountain Lions with 4:14 left in the quarter. Eric Fancher tied the match at 2 with 10:38 remaining in the first half.
Ningard, who leads the Mountain Lions with 29 goals in 2014, gave Young Harris the lead for good with 8:20 left in the half with his strike off an Adam Staniewicz assist. Ningard would score the next two YHC goals before Staniewicz added a man-up goal off a Joe Appolonia assist to give the Mountain Lions a 6-2 lead with 1:32 remaining in the third quarter.
Lees-McRae broke its scoreless streak of 45 minutes, 40 seconds when Kyle Judge scored with 4:35 remaining in the match. Connor Pittman scored the final YHC goal with three seconds left.
Zac Barrett recorded 11 faceoff wins for the Mountain Lions while Zachary Laird scooped up four ground balls. Kerry Ostrowski, Andrew Kim, Ryan Pickowitz, Mason McBroom and Staniewicz tallied three ground balls apiece for Young Harris.
Bobby Parker (two) and Adam Schneider (three) combined for five stops in goal for the Mountain Lions.
