YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. – Piedmont College held off Young Harris College 13-9 in a men's lacrosse match Friday (March 21) evening at the YHC Soccer and Lacrosse Field.
The Lions improved to 5-4 while the Mountain Lions fell to 3-8.Young Harris returns to action March 29 when they travel to Banner Elk, N.C., for a 2 p.m. match against Lees-McRae College.
Piedmont outscored Young Harris 3-0 in the first quarter before Joe Appolonia's man-up goal 18 seconds in to the second quarter got the Mountain Lions in the scoring column. An Adam Staniewicz goal followed a minute later to pull Young Harris within a goal at 3-2.
Piedmont took a 4-3 lead at the half before the Lions expanded their lead to 8-4 as they scored the first three scores of the third quarter and four of the first five. Young Harris added strikes from Ryan Ningard and Matt Spadafora in the final 48 seconds of the quarter to get within 8-6.
Ningard added his third goal of the game with 10:11 remaining to pull the Mountain Lions within a goal at 8-7; however, the Lions scored four of the next five goals to open a 12-8 lead after Spencer Otis scored with 3:23 left.
Appolonia and Staniewicz scored twice for Young Harris while Spadafora and Mason McBroom added one each. Spadafora led the Mountain Lions with three assists while Appolonia, Zachary Laird, McBroom and Ningard tallying one each.
Young Harris led 37-34 in shots while Piedmont held a slim 32-29 advantage in ground balls and a 15-10 lead in faceoffs. Andrew Kim and Zac Barrett each won five faceoffs for the Mountain Lions. Kim collected seven ground balls while Barrett and Stephen Jordan had five. Kerry Ostrowski added three more while Will Peek and Staniewicz had two each.
Bobby Parker had 10 saves in goal for the Mountain Lions.
