PARKERSBURG, W.Va. – Matt Spadafora scored twice as six different Young Harris College players scored in the Mountain Lions' 7-2 men's lacrosse victory over Ohio Valley University Wednesday (March 12) afternoon at Stadium Field.
The Mountain Lions improved to 3-6 while the Fighting Scots fell to 1-7. Young Harris wrap up their spring break road trip Sunday (March 16) with a 1 p.m. contest against Rollins College in Winter Park, Fla.
Eric Fancher scored four minutes into the match to give Young Harris a 1-0 lead. Brandon Buck scored the equalized for Ohio Valley almost five minutes later to tie the match at 1. It would be the last goal for the Fighting Scots as the Mountain Lions held them scoreless for the next 50 minutes, 12 seconds.
Mason McBroom gave Young Harris the lead for good at 2-1 with his strike from a Spadafora assist with 3:44 left in the first quarter. Spadafora, Will Peek and Adam Staniewicz scored goals for the Mountain Lions in the second quarter as Young Harris led 5-1 at the half. Joe Appolonia and Spadafora accounted for the Young Harris goals in the third quarter as the Mountain Lions jumped out to a 7-1 lead. Adam Dickson broke the Ohio Valley scoreless streak as he scored its final goal with 74 seconds remaining.
Peek and Spadafora tallied two assists for the Mountain Lions and McBroom added the other assist.
Ohio Valley held slim advantages in shots (32-30) and ground balls (31-27), but goalie Bobby Parker registered 13 saves in net for the Mountain Lions.
Zac Barrett won six faceoffs and collected five ground balls for Young Harris. Kerry Ostrowski also scooped up five ground balls while Spadafora had four. Appolonia also contributed three ground balls while Tanner Shepardson caused four turnovers.
