Pioneers holds Mountain Lions 9-8

YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. – Darrin Wilson scored four goals and Ben Boyd added three more as Tusculum College held off Young Harris College 9-8 in a non-conference men's lacrosse match Saturday (Feb. 22) afternoon at the YHC Soccer and Lacrosse Field.

The Pioneers improved to 3-0 while the Mountain Lions fell to 1-3. Young Harris returns to action Wednesday (Feb. 26) when they host Brevard College in a 3 p.m. match.

Mason McBroom gave Young Harris 1-0 lead 1:41 into the match off an assist from Zachary Laird. Wilson tied the game at 1 two minutes later before Adam Staniewicz's strike gave the Mountain Lions a 2-1 advantage with 9:38 remaining in the first quarter.  Tusculum took a 3-2 lead after the first quarter after Kellen Asmundson and Boyd tallied goals in the final five minutes.

The Mountain Lions tied the game at 3 as Matt Spadafora found the back of the net with 9:35 remaining in the half, but Tusculum took a 4-3 half time lead after Boyd added a goal two minutes later.

The Pioneers opened up a 6-3 lead with two goals in the first three minutes of the second quarter. Wilson added a man-up goal while Steven Raimondi  scored off a Wilson assist, but the Mountain Lions battled back to tie the match at 6 with three unanswered goals. Ryan Ningard scored the first two and Young Harris used a two-man advantage to tie the game on a Laird goal off a Staniewicz assists, but Tusculum led 7-6 after the third quarter on a Wilson score with five seconds remaining.

A Boyd goal gave the Pioneers an 8-6 lead with 12:46 to go, but Staniewicz got the goal back 37 seconds later off a Joe Appolonia assist. Wilson added an insurance goal with five minutes left for the Pioneers before Appolonia added a man-up goal off a McBroom assist for the Mountain Lions with 1:56 remaining.

Young Harris held a 35-33 advantage in shots and won 16-of-20 faceoffs, including 15 by Zac Barrett. Bobby Parker stopped a season-high 16 shots while John Perrucci had 11 for the Pioneers.
