Bulldogs christen new field with 12-6 win over Young Harris

WINGATE, N.C. – Cory Schumacher had three goals and three assists to lead Wingate University past Young Harris College 12-6 in a non-conference men's lacrosse match Sunday (Feb. 16) afternoon at the Irwin Belk Track Complex turf field.

The Bulldogs improved to 1-0 while the Mountain Lions fell to 1-2. Young Harris returns home to the YHC Soccer and Lacrosse Field Saturday (Feb. 22) in a 4 p.m. contest against Tusculum College.

Wingate never trailed in the match as Schumacher and Steen Swedstedt gave the Bulldogs an early 2-0 lead. Matt Spadafora and Tyler Price sandwiched goals for the Mountain Lions around a Kevin Norman goal for Wingate as the Bulldogs held a 3-2 lead after the first quarter.

Norman tallied his second goal with 10:18 to play in the second quarter, helping Wingate take a 6-2 edge. Mason McBroom and Spadafora answered with goals for the Mountain Lions, cutting the visitors' deficit to 6-4 at intermission.

Wingate held Young Harris scoreless in the third quarter as Tanner Kotch and Schumacher posted goals to nudge the Bulldogs' lead to 8-4 after the third quarter.

Spadafora scored his team-best third and final goal (12:31) to start the fourth quarter, but the Mountain Lions would get no closer down the stretch.

After Young Harris scored a rare man-down goal (4:11) by Ryan Ningard, Wingate held the Mountain Lions at bay as they scored three unanswered goals.

Wingate goalie Jacob Ormerod notched 14 saves while Alex Schneider (four) and Bobby Parker (13) combined for 17 stops in between the pipes for the Mountain Lions.
